Many are talking about the new “who done it” mystery known as “See How They Run”. That doesn’t mean all talk is good talk.
Death, money, revenge. All known as the basic murder mystery scenerios. “See How They Run” is a mystery/comedy starring Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell who play the main characters (or should I say inspectors) in this new film. The story surrounds an actual play that occurred in the 1950’s called “MouseTrap” - (a classic british murder comedy by play writer Agatha Christie). Two inspectors collect evidence when the director of the play (Leo KÖpernick) is murdered and found dead on center stage. Everyone being either a suspect or upcoming victim is in panic. Each person in the cast is questioned.
When doing so, it shows the audience the difference between a new and old inspector, the experiences they go through and how it changes them. Even though the storyline had potential, the outcome didn’t impress many.

The idea and storyline seemed very exciting at first but how they portrayed the idea turned out to be boring and a little upsetting. Thoughts seemed to never finish and questions were left unanswered. Some of those questions being…
Who’s Rockwell’s wife?
What were the character’s backgrounds?
Why did the usher have a room?
It all just doesn’t make sense!
No matter what happened to the characters, whether that was death or destruction, you never really cared for them since you never knew anything about their backgrounds. During screen time, it shows many flashbacks of the characters, full of references from other well known films (such as “Rillington Place”).
Despite my thoughts on the film, it was rated 70% in rotten tomatoes and a 6.7 by IMDb. The film does keep your attention with hilarious comedy but over all, it’s just a big question mark!
Director Tom George hasn’t directed any other films besides “See How They Run” and a short film called “Mickey and Michaella” back in 2013. I think we can say that he should pick a different profession.
